Facebook clocked 11years this year, and it’s a bigger part of our
lives than ever. We spend our free time scrolling through
friends and friends of friends’ photos from years gone by.
And we post details about our most important – and not so
important – moments. In short, it’s been a love-hate
relationship through the years.
Mark wrote about Facebook’s birthday anniversary on his profile , calling it a day of “friendship”.
Here are 11 facts about Facebook :
1. Facebook was launched on Feb4 2004.
It took about 10 months to have 1
million users and another 10 years to
reach the 1 billion users landmark.
As at December 31, 2014, it had the following statistics :
-890 million daily active users on average for
December 2014
-745 million mobile daily active users on average for
December 2014
-1.39 billion monthly active users as of December 31,
2014
-1.19 billion mobile monthly active users as of December
31, 2014
-Approximately 82.4% of our daily active users are
outside the US and Canada.
2. Facebook has the same amount of
monthly users (1.39 billion) as China—
the world’s most populous country—
has people.
3. Facebook used to be called
Thefacebook. Former president Sean
Parker helped it buy the domain
Facebook.com for $200,000.
3. There are more than one trillion
posts on Facebook.
4. YouTube founder Steve Chen spent a
few weeks working at Facebook before
leaving to start YouTube.
5. At 1.39 billion, Facebook has more
monthly active users than WhatsApp
(500 million), Twitter (284 million) and
Instagram (200 million)—combined (it
owns Instagram and WhatsApp, to boot).
The social giant spent $20 billion over
the last two years on WhatsApp and
Instagram.
6. More than 1.1 billion people use
Facebook on a mobile device on a
monthly basis. That’s 1/7 of the people
on planet Earth.
7. Facebook’s mobile platform includes
at least ten applications: Facebook,
Facebook Messenger, Facebook Pages
Manager, Paper, Slingshot, Instagram,
WhatsApp, Bolt, Rooms and Moves.
8. Facebook also found out that the
longest distance that separates two
friends who are from the same
hometown is about 20,000 kilometers.
9. Facebook has 1 billion more users
than Twitter has.
10. Facebook engineers originally
wanted to call the “Like” button the
“Awesome” button.
11. Sean Parker also convinced Mark
Zuckerberg to add photo sharing, now
the site’s most popular feature, to
Facebook. Zuckerberg initially resisted
